Just some little stats I dug up for you...
Over 2008, an average of 1,302,000 people PER ROUND have tuned into NRL matches on free-to-air each week in the capital cities.
Over 2008, an average of 3,086,000 people PER ROUND have tuned into AFL matches on free-to-air each week in the capital cities.
That means the AFL has 1,784,000 MORE free-to-air viewers in the capital cities each week than the NRL.
Also, since 2003 AFL has averaged 36,404 attendees per game, whilst NRL has a mere averaged of 16,437 patrons per game.
In Brisbane, a renowned league state.. NRL games at Suncorp which can hold 10,000 more people for blockbuster games average just under 2,000 spectators than AFL at the Gabba. With NRL's 32,362 compared to 30,488.
At Sydney's ANZ Stadium, NRL games can only muster an average 21,381 people whilst the Sydney Swans playing there draw an average of 48,071 spectators (and a healthy 27,382 at the SCG, which is higher than the entire NRL average).
I concede that the state of origin rated well, but you have to realise 1.8mil of those viewers came from just two states. So to only get 600,000 viewers from the other 50% of Australia's population, is a bit rich to claim that is the best sport. To have 1 in 16 people in non-league states to tune in to the games showcase is hardly a great endorsement of the game.

I'm not trying to argue that league is a bad game, I quite enjoy it. I was a Storm member for 3 years until I got my renewal letter and saw the price once I was no longer eligble for Student/Concession membership. I used to go so much I almost spoke Maori from hanging with the choice bro's on the hill. Kia Ora. Lol.
I just get annoyed when narrow minded Sydney-siders claim that league is the countries best game. As far as nationwide appeal goes, Rugby Union would be ahead of League. NRL has tried to break into the SA and WA markets with no success. They just do not want it. Melbourne Storm probably wouldn't still be alive if it wasn't for all the Kiwis who live here, News Limited's heavy backing and our love for anything that is sport, you could probably host a hula-hoop contest here and still get 5000 people turn up.
As far as the "aerial ping pong" thing, it just takes adjustment. It is a highly skilled, multi-directional and fast paced game that requires extreme levels of fitness with less repition than league. You might actually enjoy it once you get used to not seeing a bloke run 10 meters with the ball, get tackled, wait 15 seconds to get up, roll it back to another guy so he can run another 10 meters over and over.
